The Central Highlands has an extensive road network, incorporating sealed highways, and major and minor roads. Two major highways run through the region which are the Gregory(north-south) and Capricorn Highway(east-west).

Perhaps you enjoy journeys through scenic diverse country side? Then the individual self drive tours along one of the eight tourist routes are ideal. Take the time to soak of the history of each area in this large and wonderful region through the local museums and buildings.

3.4 RoadIf you don’t have your own wheels than regular bus services operate throughout the region. Rental vehicles are readily available for hire and taxi services are provided in major centres. A full listing of operators can be found by using the local directory on this website.

Rail

The “Spirit of the Outback” train travels twice weekly from Rockhampton to Longreach. This fascinating journey provides a unique insight into the history of the outback with sleeping berths and restaurant dining cars available. The region also has rail connections north to Mackay. Air

Flying into Emerald saves the time of travelling to the region. With several daily flights operating from Brisbane by QantasLink and Virgin, many opt for this form of transport. Visit the council website to learn more about the local airport facilities which include private charters, freight and passenger services. To make reservations visit the carriers websites or contact the local travel agent in our local directory.

Ports

Our neighbouring coastal ports located at Mackay, Hay Point, Abbot Point and the closest at Gladstone only 290kms away, together service the coal mining, agricultural and pastoral industries of the Central Highlands.
